Scenic Drive from Arusha to Lake Eyasi

The journey covers approximately 180 to 200 kilometres and normally takes around 3.5 to 4 hours.

You will travel through Northern Tanzania’s countryside towards the Great Rift Valley and Ngorongoro Highlands. The route passes farming communities, open plains and small towns before descending towards the drier Lake Eyasi basin.

Traditional Hunting and Tracking Experience

Depending on timing and community activities, you may accompany Hadzabe hunters on a guided bush walk.

Hunters traditionally use handmade bows and arrows together with detailed knowledge of tracks, animal behaviour and the surrounding environment.

The experience may involve observing tracking techniques, identifying animal signs and learning how different natural materials are used.

Actual hunting activities depend entirely on the community and circumstances on the day and cannot be guaranteed.

Traditional Bow and Arrow Skills

The Hadzabe are highly skilled in traditional archery.

Community members may demonstrate how bows and arrows are made and used. Guests may sometimes have an opportunity to try basic archery under supervision.

Your guide will explain the different materials used and the role of hunting equipment within traditional life.

Fire Making Demonstration

Another fascinating experience is learning how fire can be created using traditional friction techniques and natural materials.

You may observe community members preparing dry materials and rapidly creating an ember without modern matches or lighters.

Lake Eyasi Landscape

You will also have time to appreciate the wider Lake Eyasi basin, a shallow lake surrounded by dry woodland, seasonal wetlands and rocky landscapes.

The area provides excellent opportunities for landscape photography and occasional birdwatching. Water levels vary considerably according to rainfall and season.

Local Lunch

Around midday, you will enjoy a packed or locally prepared lunch at an appropriate location near Lake Eyasi.

Vegetarian meals and other dietary requirements can normally be arranged when communicated before the tour.

After lunch, there may be additional time for cultural interaction or photography before beginning the return journey.

Optional Datoga Community Visit

When arranged in advance, the day can include a visit to the Datoga community, another important cultural group living around Lake Eyasi.

Return to Arusha

During the afternoon, you will begin the approximately 3.5 to 4 hour drive back to Arusha.
