After a short briefing, you will begin the drive west towards Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The early departure is important because of the long travel distance and allows enough time for a rewarding game drive inside the crater.

Scenic Drive from Arusha to Ngorongoro

The journey covers approximately 190 kilometres and normally takes around 3.5 to 4 hours.

You will pass through the countryside of Northern Tanzania, travelling through towns and farming communities before reaching the fertile highlands around Karatu. The scenery gradually changes from open plains to greener rolling hills as you approach the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Arrival at the Crater Rim

Upon arrival at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, your guide will complete the required entrance formalities before continuing towards the crater rim.

From selected viewpoints, you will enjoy impressive panoramic views across the vast caldera floor. The scale of the landscape is one of the most memorable aspects of the experience.

Descent Into Ngorongoro Crater

You will then begin the approximately 600 metre descent into the crater using one of the designated access roads.

Morning Game Drive

Although Ngorongoro provides good opportunities, rhino sightings remain dependent on natural movement and visibility.

Lake Magadi

Your game drive may continue towards Lake Magadi, a shallow alkaline lake located on the crater floor.

The lake attracts a variety of water birds and may host flamingos depending on water conditions and season. The surrounding plains are also frequented by zebras, wildebeest, jackals and other wildlife.

This area provides excellent landscape and bird photography opportunities.

Hippo Pool

You may also visit one of the crater’s freshwater pools where hippos can often be observed resting in the water.

The surrounding wetlands attract birds and grazing animals, making the area an interesting stop during the game drive.

Picnic Lunch

Around midday, you will stop at a designated picnic site inside the crater for lunch.

Afternoon Game Drive

After lunch, your safari continues across the crater floor.

You may encounter elephant bulls, buffalo herds, lions resting in the grass or large groups of zebras and wildebeest moving across the plains.

Ascent From the Crater

During the mid to late afternoon, you will begin the climb back to the crater rim using the designated ascent road.

Return to Arusha
