Tour Overview

The 1 Day Arusha City Tour offers an engaging introduction to the cultural, historical and commercial heart of Northern Tanzania. Designed for travellers who want to experience more than wildlife safaris, this guided tour reveals the colourful markets, important landmarks, local neighbourhoods, traditional crafts and fascinating stories that shape everyday life in Arusha.

Located beneath the slopes of Mount Meru, Arusha is widely known as Tanzania’s safari capital and a major starting point for journeys to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro. However, the city is also an interesting destination in its own right, with a vibrant mixture of Tanzanian culture, international influence, local commerce and safari history.

Your Arusha city tour with Martial Eagle Adventures may include visits to the Arusha Clock Tower, the Natural History Museum at the Old Boma, the Central Market, the Maasai Market and the Cultural Heritage Centre. Depending on time and your interests, the experience can also include a local restaurant, a Tanzanite exhibition, a community project or a traditional craft workshop.

Most attractions are located within central Arusha or a short drive from the city centre. The complete tour normally lasts between 6 and 8 hours, although the programme can be adjusted for travellers with limited time. The experience combines short drives with guided walking, allowing you to observe the city closely while learning from a knowledgeable local guide.

This tour is suitable for couples, families, solo travellers, student groups, business visitors and safari guests spending an extra day in Arusha. It is especially recommended before or after a Tanzania safari because it provides a deeper understanding of the people, culture and communities surrounding the country’s famous wildlife destinations.

With Martial Eagle Adventures, the experience is organised privately and can be personalised according to your interests. Whether you enjoy history, photography, shopping, local food, culture or everyday city life, this Arusha day trip offers an authentic and informative journey through one of Tanzania’s most important tourism centres.

Day To day

Your 1 Day Arusha City Tour begins in the morning when a professional Martial Eagle Adventures guide collects you from your hotel or agreed meeting point. After a short introduction and tour briefing, you will begin exploring the landmarks, cultural centres and markets that give Arusha its unique character.

The order of the attractions may change depending on your hotel location, traffic, opening hours and personal interests. Most stops are located within central Arusha, while the Cultural Heritage Centre is reached through a short drive towards the western side of the city.

Arusha Clock Tower

Your first stop may be the Arusha Clock Tower, one of the city’s best-known landmarks. Located at a busy central roundabout, the tower serves as an important reference point connecting several main streets and commercial areas.

You will have time to take photographs while your guide explains the city’s development and its importance within Tanzania’s northern tourism industry. From this location, you can also observe the movement of local businesses, public transport, safari vehicles and pedestrians.

Natural History Museum and Old Boma

The tour continues to the Natural History Museum of Arusha, located within the historic Old Boma area. The museum introduces visitors to Tanzania’s natural environment, archaeology, human evolution, wildlife and colonial history.

Your guide will help explain the displays and connect them with the wider story of Arusha and Northern Tanzania. The surrounding grounds also provide a peaceful place for photography and a short break from the busier streets.

The museum visit normally takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour, depending on your level of interest.

Arusha Central Market

You will then visit the lively Arusha Central Market, where local traders sell fresh fruit, vegetables, spices, grains, household products and everyday goods. This is one of the best places to experience the real rhythm of city life.

Your guide will lead you through suitable sections of the market, explain common ingredients and help you communicate respectfully with vendors. You may see colourful displays of bananas, avocados, tomatoes, beans, rice, spices and seasonal produce grown around Arusha and Mount Meru.

Photography should only be done after receiving permission from the people involved.

Maasai Market and Handicraft Shopping

The next stop is the Maasai Market, a popular place to explore Tanzanian art, clothing and handmade souvenirs. The market features beadwork, paintings, carvings, jewellery, traditional fabrics, bags and decorative items created by local artists.

You will have time to browse the stalls and purchase souvenirs directly from vendors. Your guide may help explain the meaning of selected designs and assist with respectful price negotiation when requested.

Popular products include:

  • Maasai beadwork and jewellery
  • Traditional fabrics and clothing
  • Wooden animal carvings
  • African paintings
  • Handmade leather products
  • Woven baskets and household decorations
  • Small gifts and safari souvenirs

Traditional Tanzanian Lunch

Around midday, you will stop at a local restaurant for lunch. Depending on availability, the meal may include rice, beans, vegetables, grilled meat, plantains, ugali or other Tanzanian dishes.

This is an opportunity to experience local flavours while resting before the afternoon programme. Vegetarian meals and other dietary requirements can normally be arranged when communicated in advance.

Cultural Heritage Centre

After lunch, you will drive approximately 15 to 25 minutes to the Cultural Heritage Centre, depending on traffic and your lunch location.

The centre brings together African art, sculptures, jewellery, antiques, paintings, crafts and cultural displays. You can explore its galleries, landscaped grounds and shopping areas while learning about different artistic traditions from Tanzania and other parts of Africa.

The visit may include time for:

  • Viewing African paintings and sculptures
  • Exploring jewellery and gemstone displays
  • Shopping for high-quality souvenirs
  • Walking through the outdoor sculpture area
  • Learning about Tanzanian artistic traditions
  • Visiting selected craft and design sections

The amount of time spent at the Cultural Heritage Centre can be adjusted according to your interest in art and shopping.

Tanzanite Experience

When included in the confirmed programme, you may visit a Tanzanite exhibition or jewellery centre to learn about Tanzania’s rare blue gemstone.

The experience introduces you to the gemstone’s formation, discovery, mining, grading and preparation for jewellery. You may also view polished stones and finished products without any obligation to purchase.

Return to Your Arusha Hotel

During the late afternoon, your guide will drive you back to your hotel or another agreed location in Arusha.

Arrival is normally expected between 3:30 pm and 5:00 pm, depending on your starting time, traffic, shopping stops and the number of attractions visited. This marks the end of your 1 Day Arusha City Tour with Martial Eagle Adventures.
